As a board certified family physician, I have attended births in homes, in birth centers, and in hospitals, working alongside Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Professional Midwives, and midwives with other or no credentials. My experience supports the medical literature: More choices and options for women result in better outcomes and happier families. Midwifery care is excellent, evidence-based, patient-centered care. Healthy women expecting healthy babies have a similar chance of being the healthy living mother of a healthy living child attended by a midwife or a physician in a home, a birth center, or a hospital. But a women who is attended by a physician in a hospital is much more likely to emerge from the birth journey with a scar on her uterus or her perineum. And she is much less likely to breast feed here baby. It is in the interest of women and children’s health to preserve the option of CNM care in the hospital wherever it still exists and to expand its availability to all childbearing women.
